You work hard every day, and you expect to be paid fair wages for your work. If you’ve been working long enough, odds are you’ve had an issue with payroll at one point or another, but in many instances, a conversation with human resources or the finance department can correct the issue in a jiffy. But what if you believe you’ve been underpaid and the company or your boss isn’t being so cooperative in fixing the problem? If you believe that the company is intentionally underpaying or withholding your wages, consider talking to a wage theft lawyer about your options.
Types Of Wage Theft In Minnesota
When you hear the term “wage theft,” you probably think about receiving less on your paycheck than you actually should, but there are a number of different forms of wage theft. Common types of wage theft include:
- Unpaid hours
- Unpaid overtime
- Unpaid “off the clock” work
- Unfair wages
- Tip sharing and tip pooling violations
- Forced to work through paid breaks or meals
- Withheld compensation for unused paid time off
These are just a few examples, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a legal case if one of the above actions occurred at some point during your employment. As we mentioned above, it could just be an accidental oversight, or it may not be worth your time pursuing if it’s such a small amount. After all, a lawsuit could really change your relationship with your company, so don’t just jump into a lawsuit at the first sign that your wages are incorrect.
With that being said, if it turns out that you’ve been forced to work through paid breaks for 15 years, or your boss never follows through on his promise to pay you for jobs or overtime work that you’ve performed, it may be worth it to take your concerns to another level. If your employer won’t correct the clear and obvious issue, and you’ve given them multiple instances to do so, it may be time for legal action.
