We’ve referenced no fault car accident claims on this blog numerous times in the past, and this type of claim is quite common in car accidents without major injuries in Minnesota. A no fault claim allows you to collect compensation through your own car insurance provider, regardless of who was at fault for the accident, which makes it easier for injured claimants to get compensation during a stressful time in their life.
And while you may be aware of some of the benefits you can collect through a no fault claim, you may not be aware of all of the ways you can take advantage of the coverage you pay for after an accident. In today’s blog, we explore coverage minimums and benefit options for a no fault claim in Minnesota.
Benefits Available In A No Fault Claim
No fault coverage is provided through the Personal Injury Protection arm of your automobile insurance policy. This is a required part of automobile insurance coverage, and it provides minimum coverage for a variety of expenses you may incur as a result of your car accident. Here’s a closer look at the minimum amounts provided in a PIP no fault claim:
Medical Expenses – You are entitled to up to $20,000 of coverage for medical expenses that you incur as a result of your car accident. If your expenses exceed this amount, you may have to file an additional injury claim with the insurance company of the at fault driver. At a minimum, you will be eligible for up to $20,000 of coverage for things like doctor’s appointments, physical therapy sessions, surgeries, etc.
Non-Medical Expenses – You also get up to $20,000 in compensation for non-medical expenses, with the main expense being lost wages if the accident keeps you from being able to work for a set period of time. Similarly, if you need to leave work in order to visit the doctor, you can seek compensation for lost wages through this aspect of your PIP policy. A lost wages claim will pay up to $500 a week or 85% of your normal weekly pay, whatever is lower.
Replacement Services – Many people overlook the replacement services benefit of their PIP coverage. In Minnesota, you can receive up to $200 a week to pay for services that you need assistance with as a result of your accident. For example, if you are injured during the summer and can no longer mow the yard or perform cleaning tasks around the house, you can hire someone to provide these services, and you’ll be compensated up to $200 a week for these expenses. Similarly, if you normally watch your own kids, but your injuries require you to hire a nanny or pay for daycare, these expenses may also be covered up to $200 a week through a replacement services claim.
Funeral Expenses – Hopefully you never need to cash in on this aspect of your PIP coverage, but no fault insurance provides up to $5,000 in funeral expenses in the event that someone passed away as a result of the car accident.
